Description: Date: Circa 1908 Media: Tinted collotype Title: Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth 1620 from the Mayflower Subject: Pilgrim Shallop Publisher: Published in Germany for G.W. Morris, Portland, Maine Postage: 1¢ for United States and Island Possessions, Cuba, Canada and Mexico, 2¢ for foreign. Number: 84972 Addressed to Mrs. Eliza S. Gott, McKinley, Maine, Box 22. Front message: "Send me a postcard from Grace E. Gott" Postcard from Grace E. Gott (1896-1920) to her grandmother, Eliza Sawyer Butler, Mrs. Israel Gott (1847-1924) Grace E. Gott married Charles Lewellyn McKay on December 16, 1915. She signed the postcard as Grace E. Gott so archivists conclude that it was sent before that date. Judging by her handwriting, it is probable that she wrote the card c. 1908-1910. G.W. Morris printed their tinted collotype postcards in Germany in the early years of their existence (1901-1922). Archivists have therefore date the postcard as c. 1908. [show more]
Description: In the War of 1812, during the British blockade of the east coast, two British frigates, HMS Junon and HMS Tenedos, chased the USS Constitution into Marblehead Harbor and the safety of Fort Sewall. "When the USS Constitution, 'Old Ironsides,' was preparing for its 200th anniversary in 1997, the crew from Ralph W. Stanley was called in to help determine if it was seaworthy. So Ralph, Richard and his brother-in-law, Tim Goodwin, went to Boston to conduct a survey of the old warship. 'I went all over that ship,' Richard Stanley said. 'She was really in good shape. She could have sailed.' They made some suggestions, although he said he didn't know what the Navy did with the ship. It did sail again, he added." - from 'Stanley Boat Leaving Southwest Harbor' by Rich Hewitt, Bangor Daily News, August 24, 2009. July 1997, in honor of the 200th anniversary of USS Constitution, "Old Ironsides," commissioning, Capt. William Harland Kelley was chosen to sail the famous 204', 3-masted wooden frigate out of Boston, into Marblehead Harbor and back to Boston. This was her first independent sail in 116 years. Description: The house in the background is now the Nieman Foundation’s Walter Lippmann House at One Francis Street. It was built in 1836 by Ebenezer Francis, a carpenter and Harvard custodian. The street, of course, was named for him. In 1892, when Henry Lathrop Rand took the photograph while living at his mother’s house across Francis Street on the corner at 49 Kirkland Street, the Francis Street house was still listed on maps as the Eben Francis House. Harvard University bought the Francis property in 1974 and gave it to the Nieman Foundation. It was Christened as the Walter Lippmann house on September 23, 1979 with much fanfare attended by a raft of famous journalists and political persons. They celebrated by breaking a bottle of champagne on its front steps. Henry would have been fascinated. [show more]
Description: This photograph was taken in c.1903 before Mysie's marriage to Arthur Pope. The photograph, one of two, was in the collection of photographer, Henry L. Rand,, but not taken by him. This indicates to archivists familiar with his life that Mysie was a friend. The unknown photographer of the portraits, someone named McCormick, may have been a fellow amateur photographer. Mysie's biography is interesting as it illustrates both the later life of this young girl and the social life in Cambridge of which Rand was a part. [show more]
